Fighting chance to raise thousands of pounds for charity in Inverness this weekend

A charity boxing event which is set to raise thousands of pounds for Cancer Research UK this weekend, will take place at the Inverness Ice Centre.

Around 600 people are expected to enjoy the spectacle at the Ice Centre on Bught Drive on Saturday May 13.

Organised by Ultra White Collar Boxing, (UWCB), which is a corporate boxing venture that trains newcomers to the sport, sees rookies taking to the ring to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Similar events have been held across the country over the past eight years.

Participants get eight weeks of free training worth £300 at a local boxing gym with professional boxing coaches.

At the end of it, they are matched to an opponent based on weight, fitness, ability and age with another rookie from the group they trained with.

All boxers have a medical before and after their bout, which are contested over three rounds of two minutes, with one-minute intervals, with boxers required to wear protective headgear.

UWCB has held similar events in 100 UK cities for fighters at least 18 years old.

Robyn Johnson, Marketing Manager at UWCB said: “UWCB is a unique opportunity for people with no boxing background to experience the wonderful world of boxing, in a safe and enjoyable environment. Participants get involved for the same reasons; to get fit, learn a new sport, gain a real sense of achievement and to reach their own personal goals.”

She added: “Cancer is something that affects us all so working with Cancer Research UK has been a great opportunity. We want to raise as much money as we can for this great cause”.

Jane Fraser, Commercial Manager at Inverness Ice Centre, said: “We are delighted to be holding the UWCB charity event this weekend.

“The Inverness Ice Centre is one of the largest venues in the Highlands and it is fantastic that it is so adaptable and can be used for all kinds of events not just ice sport related. As a charity ourselves we are pleased to be hosting this event, which also supports another very deserving charity – Cancer Research UK.

“We hope to welcome a large crowd on Saturday for what I’m sure will be a very entertaining night.”

UWCB has raised £8million for Cancer Research UK since it was founded in 2009.

Doors open for the event at 4pm for VIPs and 5pm for standing. Although the event is close to a sell out a few tickets are still available. For more details go to
