A brief history of the Inverness Hurricanes

The Inverness Hurricanes is where the ice hockey story in Inverness starts.

Formed by Joe Wylie in late 1987 the ‘Canes played their first games in 1988 in a 3 game series with the Dundee North Stars.

The team went from strength to strength into the 1990s with the Aviemore Mountain resort Trophy Victory being a high point in 1993 beating teams from all over the UK, with ‘Canes Legends Joe Wylie and Willie Ritchie forming the Junior club the sport was starting to grow in the Highland Capital in the mid 90s.

In early 2002, James McIlwraith & Jason Craig started up the Highland Capitals and brought recreational hockey back to Inverness.

As the Club grew the ‘Caps started the Hurricanes team as a second string to allow the more casual players to play.

The Hurricanes developed into a stand alone team in 2016, entering the Scottish Bowl Tier 4 , and winning promotion to the Quaich in 2018 Tier 3.

After the Covid break with an influx of new players and the slow return of older players the ‘Canes took a demotion back to the Bowl where they competed in 2023/24.

Three of the original Hurricanes from 1988 are still lacing up the boots with the Club in Stevie Stewart, Guy Gibson & James McIlwraith with Joe Wylie’s son Barry also still playing. They have all given up on ever making the NHL, but still very much enjoy seeing the younger players starting to make their mark with a bright future for the sport in Inverness with the ‘Canes & ‘Caps and the Inverness Highlanders Jnr Club!
