Inverness Hurricanes Ice Hockey Club
The Hurricanes are a welcoming club, open to everyone. At present, players range in age from 18 to mid 50s. The club is focused on fun, positivity and development.
Where and when:
Training and home matches take place at Inverness Ice Centre.
Updated session times can be found on the Inverness Ice Centre online diary.
The team usually trains on Friday and Sunday evenings. Friday sessions are more focused on skating, stick handling, passing and shooting drills.
Sunday evening sessions are focused on scrimmages – in-house, informal practise games.

A brief history of the Inverness Hurricanes
The Inverness Hurricanes Ice Hockey Club is where the ice hockey story in Inverness begins.
Formed by Joe Wylie in late 1987, the Hurricanes played their first games in 1988, in a 3 game series against the Dundee North Stars.
The club went from strength to strength in the 1990s. In 1993, victory in the Aviemore Mountain Resort Trophy was a high point. The club secured wins against teams from all over the UK to lift the trophy.
Hurricanes legends Joe Wylie and Willie Ritchie went on to form a junior club for children. The sport started to grow in Inverness in the 1990s.
In early 2002, James McIlwraith & Jason Craig started a new club called Highland Capitals, and brought recreational ice hockey back to Inverness.
The Hurricanes entered the Scottish Bowl competition in 2016, and won promotion to the Quaich in 2018.
After the Covid hiatus – with an influx of new players and the return of some older players – the Hurricanes took a demotion back to the Bowl competition. The club have competed in the Bowl competition since the 2023/24 season.
Some of the original Hurricanes from 1988 are still lacing up their boots with the club in Stevie Stewart, Guy Gibson & James McIlwraith. Joe Wylie’s sons Barry and David also still play.
While they might have given up dreams of making it to the NHL, they enjoy seeing younger players starting to make their mark, with a bright future for the club and the sport in Inverness.
